Look What I Drew! 06/16/2015

Man, season 5 of Game of Thrones was a shitshow. Terrible pacing, bad writing, characters died or were put into positions for no reason other than shock value - by god, it was bad. I gave up on the series, came back for a hot minute (because the episode "Hardhome" was the only shining light of this season), and promptly left when they ruined Stannis. Yeah, season 6 needs to be amazing or this series is going bye-bye.

The biggest problem is that George RR Martin hasn't finished book 6. At all. There's only so much narrative for the show to go by, and they used it all up. They have to pull situations out of their ass and the show has suffered immensely because of it. I hate to be one of those who criticizes GRRM for his slow-paced writing, but it's true - He's making us all wait too long for his story and we have only a cheap imitation to satisfy us. It's a shame, because the show was really good up until this season, but that shows how bad the production is if they can't keep stories together once their well dries up.

Ugh. In  any case, I drew Jon Snow. He's one of my favorites. This is available for purchase as a print, which you can pick up at my shop!

The Big, Bad Bat
Only 3 more drawings left!

I'm thinking of doing a Dragonball drawing in lieu of one of the subjects I chose. Kinda have a cool idea but we'll see where it goes.

Look What I Drew! 03/17/2015

Ryuko Matoi (Kill la Kill)
One drawing down.

This was surprisingly easy and surprisingly difficult in some areas, namely the hair. I gotta work more on what I want to try with coloring techniques for hair, but this was mainly because Ryuko's got two damn different colors going on. Ah well, I'm really happy with this piece.

Next drawing is going to be Wonder Woman. I have a great idea and I can't wait to sketch it out.

By the way, here's my list for prints at Interventioncon:

  • Batman (Naturally)
  • Ryuko Matoi (Done!)
  • Wonder Woman
  • Maleficent
  • Attack on Titan (I've got a great/funny idea for this piece...)
  • Spider-Gwen
  • Sailor Moon
  • Possible Tokyo Ghoul piece
  • Harley Quinn (Because she's so damn popular)
These are subject to change but I'm pretty sure this is gonna be the lineup. I didn't want to do too many anime pieces but I have to try a couple. I may or may not do the Harley piece, but if I get a good idea I'm going for it.

1 Day art jam: Any Fantastic Four member. I chose Human Torch.

Well, this is the first drawing of the new year! It could use more attention but I'm working with a head cold so I wanted to try something cool and be done with it.

I've got some ideas for pieces: Real simple, but very cool. Can't wait to get started!

Look What I Drew! 11/05/2014

Thank you, Naruto!

I can't believe it's finally over. I'm still waiting on the last chapters to come out, but man...15 years of Naruto. I remember reading the manga in Shonen Jump first, then onto zip files I had to download (you youngins don't know squat about the early internet). Things got easier over the years, and so many sites popped up that it made it very easy to read the manga. Then I find out a month ago that the manga ends in November, and wow...so many memories. From playing the fighting games on Gamecube to getting statues and figurines at conventions, this series has been with me for so long and I won't lie that I'm pretty emotional about it.

Here I am, waiting for the last two chapters to come out. Here I am, on pins and needles, waiting for a part of my life to come to an end.

...I feel like I have to do a cosplay, now.

Look What I Drew! 10/27/2014

Finished a commission today!

Sorry for the lack of updates: I've been working on this piece and I still need to finish my Naruto/Sasuke drawing. I really want to work on other things, especially SOMA, but with work and other things getting in the way I haven't had much time. I've got free time this week and I plan on getting some work done and this was a step in the right direction.

Anyone catch Hell in a Cell last night? Pretty good event: AJ Lee and Paige was a good match, plus they're both so very hot...but I digress. I'm heated that Cena won, like he needed another victory...you just know he's going to beat Lesnar. Ugh. Having Rollins win was great! I love that dude. In my older age I've realized that I'm siding with the heels more. Nothing against Ambrose, I just don't dig the crazy guy persona.

That ending, though. Bray Wyatt coming back to interfere in the match, and in such a way! The Sistet Abigail hologram was nuts. and Bray's entrance was extremely creepy. I can't wait to see his feud with Ambrose after this, and then Rollins/Orton. Guess we'll see how things turn out tonight on RAW.

My Naruto project!

I wasn't even in the mood to work yesterday; I was dead tired from having to wake up early. Nevertheless, I'm very happy with the results of my exhaustion! Inks for both pieces will be coming shortly, then there's the task of merging the two and coloring it all in. That's gonna be fun.

I also started working on SOMA again! I checked the last time it was updated: Over a year! I couldn't believe it has been that long...it took me a minute to get into the groove but with a bit of planning I'll be kicking ass in no time.

Now, I really want some coffee.

Look What I Drew! 09/02/2014

I can't believe I forgot to post this.

It was day 6 of the Art Jam: bounty hunters. I knew I wanted to do an anime character so I decided to go with Yoko from Gurren Lagann. The original piece was terrible: a rushed traditional piece where the proportions and body type were way off. I wanted to redo it and this is the final result which I'm quite happy with.

I've been drawing somewhat recently, but definitely not how I should be. I think I burned out and the stress of trying to finish Queen's Quartz made me shy away from it. I know it's not an acceptable reason to stop working, especially since that would never fly professionaly, but it's what happened and I'm working through it.

In the meantime I've been working on sketches here and there, trying to get back into the groove. I missed my deadline for QQ but I'll still be working on it. I at least owe everyone that much.

Look What I Drew! 08/19/2014

Day 7 of the Art Jam: April O'Neil from TMNT. Just the inks for now; I may color it in soon.

Queen's Quartz is moving along nicely, but still slow for my tastes. I've got 3 rough pages finished as of today...I should be using my tablet to do more of them. I'm gonna. I don't even know why I brought it up.

I'll be going to NY Comic Con on Thursday only, so if anyone is heading there lemme know!

Art Jam, Day 4: Skeletor (Masters of the Universe)

This was one pretty fun. Only 2 more left and that's the end of the Art Jam for August!

Uhhhhh let's see...I worked on a new page for Queen's Quartz. I'll post up a preview soon, but I gotta get my work drive up if I wanna be at least halfway finished. I also tried using a different anatomy method: the bean. I've seen it used before but I never really liked it because I wasn't sure how to define the body from it, but I decided to really study this video by the artist Stan Prokopenko and it clicked. It's a very good method especially when you're working different angles of the body. I incorporated it with the latest page and I can already see a difference in anatomy.

What methods do you other artists use? Lemme know in the comments!

Art Jam, Day 4: Sawyer from LOST.

I didn't care much for this subject. I'd much rather stick with cartoons/movies/comics, but tv shows? Eh. It always runs the risk of being something you never watched, or you hated. This fell right into that category. I never watched Lost, never cared to, and honestly it took some effort to get through this one.

The next day'll be better. Truth be told, I'm a day behind, but I'll get to it tomorrow...I'm so tired.

Anybody got a show they don't care about, and why?

Look What I Drew! 08/02/2014

Art Jam, Day 2: Usagi Yojimbo. I had the action figure of him when I was a kid and the Ninja Turtle toys were all the rage.

I have a commission due, more art jam subjects, and Queen's Quartz, so my schedule is full this week. Feels pretty good to be an artist right now!

Look What I Drew! 07/31/2014

Fina doesn't like to be touched, or laughed at. You'll understand why soon.

So here's the subjects for the Art Jam:
day 1_Guardians of the Galaxy
day 2_Usagi Yojimbo
day 3_Don Bluth's Dragon's Lair or Space Ace
day 4_LOST
day 5_Masters of The Universe
day 6_Bounty Hunters
day 7_April O'neil

Day 1 is already done and I've got the idea for Yojimbo in my head. Hopefully it'll transfer well to paper - er, screen - but I can't wait to show you guys!

Any ideas for another art jam? Leave comments and lemme know wussuuuup...maybe I'll include them when it's my turn to choose!

Look What I Drew! 07/28/2014

Another Queen's Quartz update! This time, it's the main character Serafina. Isn't she cute?

So, comic's coming along nicely and all that. I've got a good few days to work on it this week, so with any luck I can be about halfway through with the chapter by next week. Other than that, I have the Art Jam and that's about it!

Comic Con ended and there was some juicy tidbits going on. Mad Max: Fury Road was probably the biggest thing for me, especially since I couldn't care less about Batman V. Superman and I know Avengers is gonna be awesome. Anyway, Mad Max looks incredible! It's gonna be intense. and I'm glad there was no obvious CG or wires or anything like that: just straight up action and stunts...I'm so excited.

I'm waiting for the new Interstellar trailer; I heard it blew everyone away.

Look What I Drew! 07/23/2014

Another preview for Queen's Quartz! I'm about finished with a very awesome splash page, and I would've posted it but I really want it to be a surprise for you all. I'm very proud of it.

Also, Happy Batman Day! I managed to get my butt to the nearest comic shops and picked up Death of the Family, which was amazing. A very gripping story, and there's a twist in it near the end that had my eyes wide in shock. All in all, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo have been killing it on their Batman run.

Oh, and there's an art jam coming up so expect an influx of drawings soon. I'm thinking of going monochromatic with the subjects this time around...

Look What I Drew! 07/16/2014

The new Thor! I'm excited for the change: I've already read the gripes of fanboys and honestly, I'm so tired of them. We've already Beta Ray Bill and Throg, a friggin' frog, but a woman being the God of Thunder is suddenly, what, a mockery? Unacceptable?

I'm just so done with it.

It's one more step to equality, and regardless of whether male fans like it or not, it's gonna happen, and I for one am happy about that. On a side note: I love that she's not oversexualized. She looks badass, like Thor would and should be.

October can't come soon enough!

A preview of a new page from Queen's Quartz!

I hope everyone had a good Independence Day. I spent mine at work, which wasn't too bad, but I've been used to having this day off and going to a family bbq so this was an unwanted change. I could've had a beer and a hamburger. damnit.

Anyhoo, my birthday's in two days and I plan on partying hard for the 3-0. I mean, let's face it: it's all downhill from here.

Look What I Drew! 07/01/2014

The first page of Queen's Quartz is up!

Okay, this was actually done a couple of days ago but I was having issues uploading on my phone so it took me a bit to get it on here. I have 3 pages set up and the second one is almost finished (tones are a pain in the ass), but it's all coming together very nicely! I need to get some more thumbnails done and I can definitely do 2 rough pages a day if I keep this pace going.

In other news, I saw Transformers: Age of Extinction. It was...craziness. I knew going into it that the story would be terrible - it is a Michael Bay film, after all - but damned if it didn't keep me entertained. Mark Wahlberg was actually pretty decent in this: funny, held his own in the action scenes but they didn't make him to be this super badass or anything. The only area that took me out of the movie was that he was way too jacked for an inventor, otherwise I was all in.

If you loved the first 3, you'll love this one. If not...it's a movie about giant robots: quit taking it seriously.

I'm going to end this post with a rant: The other day a fellow artist complained that getting comments/feedback such as "Your art looks like (insert another artist here)!" wasn't good because it made them feel that their art wasn't original.

I'm sorry, but here's where I take slight offense: nobody's art is original. Unique, sure, but every artist borrows from another so you'll never be truly original. To think that you are seems arrogant, personally. I understand that an artist has to feel that they're doing something no one's ever seen, and that can happen in how you approach the subject. You can tell the same story from a different perspective, you know?

In any case. it irked me to read this, then have people agree with the notion. I know that I've borrowed from others and made something that makes my style unique, and I feel that should be encouraged more than telling others they're special snowflakes.

Your guys's thoughts? Leave comments!
