Comic Pages

Dear lord, making a comic is hard work. I can't say I'm not enjoying it, getting all this drawing time in and working on my own project. It's just a lot to take on. I'm up to page 9, which means I have about 9-11 more pages before I can hand this in to the comic project I wrote about in the last post. Very excited for that. I'll leave you guys with a quick piece I popped out last night. Enjoy!

A glimmer of hope!

I was invited to join a Shonen Jump-type group for my comic. It's an awesome way to get my comic promoted! I'm pretty happy about this, since I usually get lazy with my art...

It's good to have a reason to keep going with my comic, especially since it means potential fans coming my way. I love knowing people get a kick out of what I put out~ I can't wait to see how this turns out. Once the first issue comes out I'll post a link!

Been quite productive in the past 3 months.

I reckon I've done over 20 pieces in since June-July. It's probably the most productive I've ever been, and that's not including my comic! I feel pretty good about myself right now~ It's been a crazy couple of months, but in that time I've managed to tighten up my drawing and study coloring, which has been pretty important. I've also learned how to add details and work digitally, which has been a time saver. What does kind of suck is that, in the past week there's been a lot of talk about fan art laws, and that puts what could have been a nice business venture into the mud. I'm sure some people will still sell fanart, even though it's pretty much illegal to do so, but there's too many people doing it and it'd be hard to stop them all. That turns the issue into more of a morality stance - do you feel if it's okay to profit off of somebody else's ideas? It's hard to stifle a good idea, especially since most people's intellectual properties inspire many artists to do their own take on the idea. Fan art is also the main reason why fans A.) follow an artist B.) purchase pieces at conventions In a different world, artists would be able to sell their original ideas with as much fanfare as their fan art gets. Since that's not the case, and most artists want to be able to make money off of their art, it seems like we have no choice but to make fan art in order to bring fans in. I know the topic is more or less a "look the other way" view, but it still sucks to be in such a predicament. That being said, I was planning on making designs for t-shirts and eventually selling fan art of my own, but it seems almost taboo to do so now. Then again, these laws have always been around, so I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens. Ah well. I'm gonna keep drawing.

Check out my comic, Short Order Mobile Action!

Check it here!

Slightly depressed.

It's been six months since I lost my job at a design company. In that time, I've been trying to make a name for myself and promote my artwork as much as I could.

That plan hasn't worked out as well as I wanted.

I didn't expect it to be easy, but I sure didn't expect it to be so hard. I feel like I've started to come into my own as an artist, and I've been putting out some of the best work I've done up until now... But I also feel like I have nothing to show for it. I haven't gotten any commissions, I haven't gotten any freelance jobs, and it's like I've made one step forward when it should have been three.

I don't mean for this to be a "woe is me" post, but it helps to get my frustration out. I'm gonna see if I can go back to my previous job, before the design company, and my art will continue, but it's a 9-5 so my progress will more than likely take a hit.

It's not too late for something to happen, but at this point I'm praying for a miracle.

Tim Drake - Colors
I wasn't up to drawing tonight but I didn't want to sit around doing nothing so I decided to give coloring a shot. The tablet & pen are starting to become familiar to me, so I'm going to try more color pieces in the future~

First digital drawing!

Finally got around to drawing on my tablet. I've done inking plenty of times, but I was too inexperienced and impatient to keep going with it so I let my tablet collect dust and stuck with drawing/inking traditionally.

Well, after some time, and buying a laptop and becoming fully dependent on staying in bed because of the laziness factor (you know it's awesome), I've decided to be productive and get the ol' Wacom out again. After inking a few pics, which I think have come out rather nicely, I'm moving up to actually drawing digitally.

It was...slightly difficult. I'm not used to such disassociation from my hand to paper, and I'm so used to looking down at my work that it's like learning how to draw all over again. I've been using my tablet to navigate around my computer though, anything to get used to my pen. I think it's been working~

Pencils

Inks
Old piece I drew sometime last year, I think? Rendition of Tim Drake, a.k.a. Red Robin.
Pencils

Inks
The sketch had Garrus with an elongated chin, narrower eyes and a smaller neck guard. I fixed those parts and then digitally inked the piece. I think it came out much better~

I've been trying my hand at digital inking lately. It's a bit difficult learning how far the disassociation goes from your hand to the screen as opposed to having the paper in front of you when you ink traditionally, but I feel like I'm getting better. I'm also trying to thicken line weight so that way I can get better pictures.

My piece for the Design by Humans
The Dark Knight Rises contest. It got
rejected, but because they don't explain why
I didn't know what to fix so I never resubmitted.

New blog!

I'm making a new blog for my artwork. I'm going to be posting a lot of drawings, WIPs and comic pages so I hope you like it! YOU'RE GONNA LIKE IT.
My best friend, also with a handlebar mustache.
